Website accessibility compliance means building and maintaining a website so that people with disabilities can use it with assistive technology, measured against the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA. In the United States, the Department of Justice applies the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) to the goods and services businesses offer online, and names WCAG as helpful guidance for meeting it.

Does ADA compliance apply to websites?

Yes. Title III of the ADA applies to businesses open to the public, and the Department of Justice says it has consistently taken the position that the ADA applies to the goods and services those businesses offer on the web. There is no exemption for small businesses; religious organizations and private clubs are the main exceptions.

The ADA text does not list technical requirements for websites. For state and local governments, the DOJ's April 2024 Title II rule requires WCAG 2.1 Level AA. For businesses open to the public, the DOJ says it does not have a regulation setting out detailed standards, and that existing technical standards, including WCAG, provide helpful guidance. WCAG 2.1 AA is the standard a GrossiWeb audit tests against.

How much does it cost to make my website ADA compliant?

GrossiWeb charges $1,500 for a small-site audit (up to 10 pages), $2,500 for a full audit (up to 20 pages, delivered in 5 business days), remediation at $150 an hour or as a fixed quote from the audit, and $250 a month for monitoring. Published 2026 guides from Accessible.org and WCAGsafe put a manual audit of a 10 to 20 page site at $1,500 to $5,000 and remediation at $100 to $200 an hour.

What drives the cost is the number of distinct templates and interactive elements, not the number of visitors. A brochure site with five templates is a short job; an e-commerce checkout, booking flow or web application is not. The audit fixes the remediation price in advance, so there is no open-ended hourly bill. For comparison, published settlement figures for small-business ADA website demands are typically in the $5,000 to $20,000 range before legal fees (Accessibility.build lawsuit tracker, 2026).

How do I get my website ADA compliant?

Audit against WCAG 2.1 AA with both automated tools and manual testing, fix the issues in the code rather than with an overlay, publish an accessibility statement, and re-test whenever content or design changes. Automated scanners find roughly a quarter to a third of issues, so a manual pass with a keyboard and a screen reader is not optional.

GrossiWeb's audit runs every template through axe and WAVE, then tests by hand with keyboard-only navigation and the NVDA and VoiceOver screen readers, and records each failure with the WCAG criterion, the page, the element and the fix. Because the same team builds sites in Next.js and on other platforms, remediation goes straight into the code: alt text, form labels, focus order, color contrast, headings, captions and ARIA where it is actually needed.

How do I avoid an ADA website lawsuit?

Remove the barriers that automated lawsuit scanners look for first (missing alt text, unlabeled form fields, keyboard traps, poor color contrast), fix the rest of the WCAG 2.1 AA findings in the code, publish an accessibility statement with a contact route, and keep records of the audit and the fixes. Nothing guarantees you will not receive a demand letter, but documented, ongoing remediation is what settles them cheaply.

Accessibility overlays and widgets do not do this. They change the page in the browser, leave the underlying code non-conformant, and plaintiff firms now name overlay users specifically. If you have already received a demand letter or complaint, the audit becomes the evidence of a good-faith remediation plan; contact us the same day and we schedule the audit within a week.

Questions people ask

What is the best ADA compliance tool for a website?

For finding issues, the free axe browser extension and WAVE are the standard automated scanners, and neither is a compliance tool on its own because automated checks catch only around a quarter to a third of WCAG failures. The rest need a person with a keyboard and a screen reader. Widgets sold as instant compliance overlays are not tools of either kind; see the question below. Ongoing scanning after remediation is part of the maintenance and support service.

Do accessibility overlays make a website ADA compliant?

No. An overlay is a script that alters the page in the visitor's browser; the underlying code stays non-conformant, screen reader users often turn overlays off, and lawsuit filings now cite overlay use as evidence that a site was not fixed. Conformance has to be in the code, which is what GrossiWeb's remediation does.

Is ADA compliance mandatory for websites?

For businesses open to the public in the United States, yes in practice: the Department of Justice says the ADA applies to the goods and services those businesses offer on the web, and that businesses have flexibility in how they comply but must comply. State and local government sites have an explicit DOJ rule from April 2024 requiring WCAG 2.1 AA; an April 2026 interim final rule moved its compliance dates to April 26, 2027 for governments with a population of 50,000 or more and April 26, 2028 for smaller ones and special districts. There is no small-business exemption, though religious organizations and private clubs are excluded. The exposure is highest for healthcare practices and ecommerce stores, which is where most demand letters land.

What are the most common website accessibility problems?

The failures that appear in most audits and most lawsuits are the same short list: images without alt text, form fields without labels, links and buttons that cannot be reached or operated by keyboard, text with too little color contrast, videos without captions, PDFs that screen readers cannot parse, and heading structures that skip levels. All of them are fixable in the code. GrossiWeb fixes them in the web design system and the front-end code.

What is WCAG 2.1 AA?

WCAG 2.1 is version 2.1 of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, published by the W3C in 2018, organized under four principles: perceivable, operable, understandable and robust. Level AA is the middle of its three conformance levels and the one regulators and courts reference. WCAG 2.2, published in 2023, adds nine criteria; GrossiWeb audits against 2.1 AA and flags the 2.2 additions. GrossiWeb designs to it as part of UX and UI design rather than retrofitting it later.
