Marketing / Generative Engine Optimization

When AI answers the question, your brand should be in the answer.

GEO is the new SEO. When ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google AI answers a buyer's question, the businesses named in that answer get the enquiry. We measure whether you are one of them, then fix it.

Generative Engine Optimization

Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of making a business's website and off-site presence easy for AI answer engines such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Microsoft Copilot to retrieve, trust and cite. Answer engine optimization (AEO) describes the same work from the answer's side, and the two terms are used interchangeably.

GrossiWeb is a web design and digital marketing agency based in Atlanta, Georgia, founded in 2006. It provides generative engine optimization for businesses in Atlanta, Raleigh, Los Angeles and across the United States, starting with a fixed-price AI Visibility Audit that measures how often ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI mention or cite a brand.

What this means for your business

Generative Engine Optimization is fundamentally different from traditional SEO. AI systems don't rank pages: they synthesize answers from trusted sources. To appear in those answers, your content needs to be structured, authoritative, and specifically optimized for machine comprehension.

How it works

What you need to know before you start.

What are generative engine optimization services?

GEO services are the work that makes a brand citable by AI engines: measuring current AI visibility, fixing technical retrieval (crawler access, indexing in Bing and Google, structured data), rewriting pages so each one answers a specific question in its first sentences, making the business's facts identical everywhere on the web, and earning mentions on the third-party sites the engines already trust.

At GrossiWeb every engagement starts with the AI Visibility Audit: 20 questions your buyers actually ask, run three times each through ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Mode and Copilot, with every answer, citation and competitor recorded. The audit shows which questions you are absent from, who is being cited instead, and what those pages have that yours do not. The retainer then works through that list, page by page, and re-runs the same 20 questions every month so progress is measured against the baseline rather than guessed.

How do I get my business to show up in ChatGPT or Google AI Overviews?

Four things have to be true before an AI engine will cite a business: its crawlers can fetch your pages, the pages state clear answers that can be lifted whole, your business facts match across your site, Google Business Profile and directories, and independent sites mention you.

In practice that means allowing GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and Googlebot in robots.txt and at the CDN, submitting the sitemap to Bing Webmaster Tools because ChatGPT search draws on the Bing index, opening each page with a two-sentence definition, adding a question-and-answer section built from real search queries, publishing prices and comparisons because cost questions are answered from pages that name a number, and getting listed on the directories and roundups the engines cite. GrossiWeb does the technical and content work directly and runs the citation outreach with you, because platform posts must come from a real person with a disclosed affiliation.

What is the difference between SEO and GEO?

SEO earns a ranked link on a results page and a click; GEO earns a mention or a citation inside a generated answer, where the reader may never click at all. SEO rewards depth, backlinks and keyword coverage, while GEO rewards extractable sentences, consistent entity facts and mentions on the platforms AI engines already trust.

The two are not alternatives. Every engine that answers questions still retrieves from a web index, so a page that cannot rank well is unlikely to be retrieved at all. GrossiWeb treats GEO as a layer on top of technical and content SEO, and the same monthly report covers both: non-branded impressions in Search Console and citation share on the 20 baseline questions.

How long does it take to appear in AI answers?

There is no published benchmark, and the honest answer is that it depends on which engine and which question. Engines that retrieve live web results (Perplexity, ChatGPT with search, Google AI Mode) can reflect a changed page within days of re-crawling it, while answers drawn from a model's training data change only when the model is retrained.

That is why GrossiWeb sets the baseline before touching a page and re-measures monthly. Early movement usually shows first on the specific, long-tail questions where a page now states an answer nobody else states plainly; broad "which agency is best" questions move last, because they are decided by third-party mentions and reviews rather than by your own site.

How much do GEO services cost?

GrossiWeb charges $1,500 for the AI Visibility Audit and from $2,500 a month for the ongoing GEO retainer. For context, agency pricing guides published in 2026 by WebFX and Digital Elevator put credible mid-market GEO and AEO retainers between roughly $2,000 and $10,000 a month, with one-off audits between about $1,200 and $4,500.

The retainer price rises with the number of pages in scope and the amount of new content needed, not with your revenue. Local businesses that mainly need to be found in Atlanta are usually better served by the Local Visibility package, which includes the Google Business Profile and citation work that AI engines also draw on.

Who is GEO for, and when does it not apply?

Generative engine optimization pays off for businesses whose buyers ask questions before they buy: professional services, healthcare practices, B2B software, specialist contractors and any company selling a considered purchase. It does not apply yet to businesses whose customers only search by name or on a map, such as a single restaurant or a barber shop; for those, a Local Visibility package and reviews do the work. GrossiWeb says so on the discovery call rather than selling the audit.

Can GEO be measured, and what happens if AI cites us incorrectly?

Yes. GrossiWeb records, for a fixed set of 20 buyer questions, whether each engine names or links the business, repeats the run monthly and reports the change as a citation count rather than a ranking. Incorrect citations are usually an outdated fact repeated from a directory or an old page; the fix is to correct the source, which is why the retainer keeps the business facts identical across the site, Google Business Profile and the directories, then re-runs the questions to confirm the engines picked up the change.

FAQs

Questions people ask

What is answer engine optimization?

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring content so that AI answer engines and voice assistants select it as the direct answer to a question. It overlaps almost entirely with generative engine optimization; AEO names the goal (being the answer) and GEO names the engines (generative models). GrossiWeb uses one method for both, described on this page. The search side is on the SEO page; the diagnosis steps are on not showing up in AI answers.

Is GEO replacing SEO?

No. Every AI engine that answers questions still retrieves pages from a web index, so search visibility remains the entry ticket. What has changed is where the value lands: an answer engine can read your page, cite it and never send a click. GrossiWeb reports both, so you can see impressions in Search Console and citations on the baseline questions side by side.

Why isn't my website showing up in ChatGPT?

Usually one of four reasons: AI crawlers are blocked at robots.txt or the CDN, the site is missing from the Bing index that ChatGPT search uses, the pages describe the business in marketing language rather than stating answers, or nobody outside your own site mentions you. The not showing up in AI answers page walks through how to check each one.

What is the difference between SEO and AEO?

SEO aims at a ranked link and a click; AEO aims at being quoted inside a generated answer. SEO signals are backlinks, keyword coverage and technical health; AEO signals are extractable sentences, consistent facts about the business across the web, and mentions on the sources answer engines already trust. A page needs both to be retrieved and then cited. GrossiWeb runs both under one retainer, described on the SEO page and in the Visibility & Search solutions.

How do I check if my business is being cited by AI?

Ask the engines the questions your buyers ask, in a fresh or temporary session with personalisation off, and record whether your name or link appears. Do it several times per engine because answers vary between runs. GrossiWeb's AI Visibility Audit runs 20 questions three times each on four engines and records every citation, which is the only way to get a number rather than an impression. The same checks feed the monthly report described under analytics and reporting.

How much does it cost to hire someone to do SEO?

Published agency retainers in 2026 run from about $1,500 to $5,000 a month for small and mid-sized businesses, according to pricing guides from Ahrefs and WebFX. GrossiWeb offers a $750 a month Local Visibility package for owner-run businesses and combined SEO and GEO retainers from $2,500 a month; both prices are published on the relevant page.
